And then there was the time me mate and me went camping in the Lake District, having spent my childhood up there.
So we threw my old canvas ridge tent in the boot of the Citroen GS (told you I like Citroens) and headed for Mungrisedale, near Keswick.Anyone who doesn't know,Mungrisedale is about as remote as I'd want to get (too far from a pub) but beautiful country and amazing still pools of icy water in a stream that plummets straight down off the mountains. When I was a kid my parents used to swim in those clear pools, which were about ten feet (sorry, three metres) deep.
On the way up,on the motorway, the air-cooled Citroen decided to snap its fan belt which also took out the cooling fan,a big nylon affair.Sadly, there isn't much left to cool the engine, except the oil and it was a gloriously hot day,so the oil temperature warning light had to come on.Since it had never been on before I wasn't sure what it was trying to tell me at first,so I slowed to sixty and waited for the light to go out;which it did after a minute or so and we carried on,watchful eye on light.Thankfully,it never did come on again.Course,it might have burnt itself out, after a brief moment of glory.
